The Yeomen of the Guard - 2019

Yeomen19 Handbill

The Yeomen of the Guard is a Savoy Opera which premiered at London's  Savoy Theatre on 3 October 1888. It ran for 423 performances and was the eleventh collaboration of fourteen between Gilbert and Sullivan.

JLOS has performed it about ten times in its 71 years and the latest show was at the Questors Theatre in Ealing in November 2019. As usual in recent times, the words were those of Mr. Gilbert and the music was that of Sir Arthur. But the production itself was very different.

The set, designed by chorus member Martin Jarvis (he's the second Yeoman from the left, in the front row of the pic above) did not include the Tower of London in its usual form on stage. Instead a large map (painted by Martin in his back garden!) of that part of the capital in its time was included in the otherwise clean and uncomlicated look.

The show, directed once again by professional Fraser Grant, ran for five performances including a Saturday matinee and was warmly appreciated by the audiences.
